The 20th stage of the Tour de France 2005 consisted of a 55.5 km long and demanding time trial with start and finish in Saint-Étienne .
Ivan Basso had a lightning start and in the first split after 17 kilometers he had a lead of seven seconds over Lance Armstrong . After that, however, he fell behind because he didn't take any risks on the winding descents and drove very carefully. The only one who could keep up with Armstrong to some extent was Jan Ullrich , who finished second in the stage and, thanks to Rasmussen's bad luck, moved up to third place in the overall classification. Thanks to a good performance, the T-Mobile team was able to keep the top spot in the team ranking.
The unlucky person of the day was Michael Rasmussen , who only finished 77th in the stage classification. Shortly after take-off, he brushed the curb and fell. After that, he had to change his bike no less than three times due to a defect and have two defective bikes replaced. Finally, on the descent from Col de la Gachet, he fell a second time and landed in the ditch. As a result, he lost a lot of time and slipped from third to seventh place in the overall classification.
