The 9th stage of the Tour de France 2005 led from Gérardmer over numerous hills of the Vosges to Mulhouse and was 171 kilometers long. Among other things, the drivers had to overcome the Grand Ballon and the Ballon d'Alsace . However, the last fifty kilometers or so before the finish line were flat. Exactly 100 years earlier , the Ballon d'Alsace had been the first mountain in the history of the Tour de France.

“Man of the day” was the Dane Michael Rasmussen from the Rabobank team, who had already won four of the five mountain ratings the day before . In the first few kilometers after the start, he went on the offensive. Although could Dario Cioni meantime catch up with him, but the Italian was ascending the Col de Bussang suspended again.

Behind Rasmussen, a group of six had initially formed. In the ascent to the Ballon d'Alsace , Jens Voigt and Christophe Moreau set out in pursuit of Rasmussen. At the top of the pass, the duo was 4:20 minutes behind, while the main field with all favorites was already 9:30 minutes behind on the overall victory.

Twenty kilometers from the finish, Voigt had to stop briefly because of a defect, but was able to catch up with Moreau, who had been waiting for him. Rasmussen lost some time, but reached the finish line with a lead of over three minutes over Voigt and Moreau, and the field followed another three minutes later. Voigt was thus able to take over the yellow jersey from Lance Armstrong , while Rasmussen extended his lead in the mountain classification.
