The 19th stage of the Tour de France 2005 was 153.5 kilometers long and led from Issoire to Le Puy-en-Velay through the south-eastern part of the Massif Central . 30 kilometers after the start, Giuseppe Guerini , Óscar Pereiro and Sandy Casar pulled away from the field. Ten kilometers later, Franco Pellizotti caught up with them.
A chasing group with ten drivers formed behind the leading group. At times, the field was back at 8:45 minutes and then fell continuously. The field didn't want to lose too much time on Pereiro, who was 13th overall at the time. In the chasing group, Salvatore Commesso tried almost a dozen times to launch an attack, but was always caught up again.
In the top group, Pereiro did the most leadership work. But on the last kilometer he was unable to counter the attack by Guerini. Guerini left his companions behind and won the 250th Italian stage victory in the Tour de France. The chasing group had disbanded over the last few kilometers and the drivers arrived at the finish line after two and a half to four minutes.
The field crossed the finish line after 4:30 minutes, Robbie McEwen prevailed in the sprint against Thor Hushovd and reduced his deficit in the points classification. Michael Rasmussen was already the winner of the mountain classification at this point.
