The 8th stage of the Tour de France 2005 began in Pforzheim , which had already been the finish and start location of the Tour de France 1987 . The route initially led over some foothills of the northern Black Forest , then through the flat plains of the Ortenaukreis , the Breisgau and central Alsace . Finally, the Vosges had to be crossed, with the 1139 meter high Col de la Schlucht as the main obstacle. The destination was in Gérardmer . With a length of 231.5 kilometers, it was the second longest stage of this year's tour.

On the first ascent to Dobel , Jörg Ludewig and Rubens Bertogliati were able to break away from the field. But a little later they were overtaken by a quintet; This included Jens Voigt and George Hincapie (at that time still second in the overall ranking). Only after around 70 kilometers could the field catch up again.

A new top group of five formed almost 90 kilometers from the finish. At the beginning of the 16-kilometer ascent to Col de la Schlucht , Pieter Weening was able to pull away. The T-Mobile drivers Alexander Winokurow , Jan Ullrich and Andreas Klöden brought Lance Armstrong into trouble for the first time, as all other drivers on Discovery Channel had already been left behind. Finally, Klöden managed to break away from the group and catch up with Weening shortly before the top of the pass.

After Klöden had won the mountain classification, the two top riders were able to extend their lead on the descent down to Gérardmer . In the sprint for the stage win, there was a photo finish . Weening won 9.6 millimeters from Klöden.
