Talmont-Saint-Hilaire is a French commune with 7,657 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Les Sables-d'Olonne and the canton of Talmont-Saint-Hilaire .
geography
Talmont-Saint-Hilaire is on the Côte de Lumière , the "Coast of Light", the sunniest strip of the French Atlantic coast with an average of 2,500 hours of sunshine a year . In the south-east, the Île Bernard river touches the municipality and finally forms the Payré estuary near the village of Ilaude , which reaches the open sea after around five kilometers at the Pointe du Payré .

The coastline borders the southwest of Talmont-Saint-Hilaire. Clockwise, the municipalities of Château-d'Olonne , Sainte-Foy , Grosbreuil , Poiroux , Saint-Hilaire-la-Forêt , Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard and Jard-sur-Mer join.
history
The Talmont area was given in the 11th century by Wilhelm the Great to Wilhelm the Kahlen, who had a donjon built here . The English King Richard the Lionheart had the place fortified.
The castle was besieged by Henry of Navarre in the 16th century and the donjon was demolished in the 17th century. The last lord of Talmont was Antoine-Philippe de La Trémoille , who was guillotined in 1794.
Like other places in western France, Talmont also took in refugees from the eastern French areas occupied by German troops during the First World War .
During the German occupation in World War II , the occupiers built fortifications belonging to the Atlantic Wall between 1942 and 1944 . Even today, at low tide, one can see tetrahedral barriers made of three pieces of concrete on the beach and in front of the mouth of the Payré, popularly known as Asperges de Rommel , " Rommel asparagus", which were supposed to prevent Allied watercraft from landing. But also the bunkers above today's Bourgenay marina are part of it.
On the night of February 27-28 , 2010, hurricane Xynthia reached the French Atlantic coast and also caused severe damage to buildings, traffic routes, the coastline, the beach and the marina in Talmont-Saint-Hilaire, even if it was here Happiness did not result in any fatalities.
Population development
In 1974 the municipalities of Talmont and Saint-Hilaire-de-Talmont merged to form the municipality of Talmont-Saint-Hilaire.

As a tourist destination, the number of people living in Talmont-Saint-Hilaire grows from 7,000 every year in midsummer to around 35,000.

Museums
The Musée Automobile de Vendée, founded by Gaston Giron, has been in existence in the west of Talmont on the Route des Sables d'Olonne since April 1976, with more than 150 vehicles on display today.
