La Garnache is a French village with 4,995 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Les Sables-d'Olonne and the Canton of Challans .
La Garnache is located in the north-west of the Vendée, between the Marais Breton and the Atlantic coast, around 40 km from La Roche-sur-Yon , 60 km from Nantes , Saint-Jean-de-Monts and 35 km from Noirmoutier .
history
The dynasty of the Lords of La Garnache first appeared around 1045 as vassals of the Vice Counts of Thouars ; their possessions extended to La Garnache, Beauvoir-sur-Mer , Bois-de-Céné , the Île d'Yeu , the Île de Noirmoutier , Sallertaine etc. Six lords of La Garnache built their mighty castle until 1214, before the country fell successively to the Lords of Belleville , the House of Clisson and the House of Rohan- Soubise. King Louis XIII finally ordered the fortress to be torn down.
