Saint-Gilles-Croix-de- Vie is a French municipality with 7655 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Les Sables-d'Olonne and the canton of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez .
geography
The municipality is located around 65 kilometers (as the crow flies) southwest of Nantes . The Île d'Yeu lies 34 km west in the Atlantic. The neighboring municipalities of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie are:
- Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez to the west and north,
- Le Fenouiller in the northeast,
- Givrand to the east and
- Bretignolles-sur-Mer in the southeast.
In the south, the municipality borders the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean . In the local area, the river Vie flows into the sea after its left tributary Jaunay has reached it shortly before it .
history
The place emerged from the merger of the municipalities of Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie and Croix-de-Vie, which were independent until 1967 . The inhabitants have been called Gillocruciens ever since.

Attractions
- The Saint-Gilles church was built in the 14th and 15th centuries and was redesigned in the 19th century in the Flamboyant and Renaissance styles . The north side of the nave and the church tower from the construction phase of the church building are classified as Monument historique ( inscrit ). The vault of the nave and the keystones date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The windows are modern.
- In the cemetery of the Saint-Gilles Church are the Menhir de la Tonnelle and a Croix Hosannière from the 16th century and tombstones from the 15th to 17th centuries.
- The Musée maraîchin shows local folklore, furniture and costumes.
economy
The main line of business is tourism. As a fishing port, Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie ranks sixth in France in terms of fish tonnage landed. Saint-Gilles used to be a leader in the catching and processing of sardines .
Community partnerships
Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie has been in partnership with Luanco, a town in the Spanish municipality of Gozón in Asturias , since 2006 .
