The menhir de la Tonnelle stands in the cemetery of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie , near Les Sables-d'Olonne in the Vendée department in France .

Menhir de la Tonnelle

The approximately 2.8 m high, 1.1 m wide and 0.4 m thick menhir was moved from its original location in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez to be used as a stele at the grave of the local historian Marcel Baudouin (1860–1941) to serve. Baudouin was the co-founder, treasurer and secretary general of the Société préhistorique française (French Prehistoric Society) from 1906 to 1919 . In 1904 he founded the magazine L'Homme préhistorique with Arthur Chervin (1850–1921), Georges Courty (1875–1953) and Adrien de Mortillet (1853–1931) .
