Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez is a French commune with 11,169 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vendée department in the Pays de la Loire region . The municipality is a member of the Pays de Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie municipal association . The inhabitants call themselves Hilairois (es).
geography
The city is a glamorous seaside resort on the Côte de Lumière on the Atlantic coast . Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez are Saint-Jean-des-Monts in the north-west, Le Perrier and Soullans in the north, Notre-Dame-de-Riez in the east, Le Fenouiller in the south-east and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de- Vie in the south. The river Vie and its tributary Ligneron run along the eastern boundary of the municipality .
history
In 1622 the battle near Riez took place here, after the end of which around 1,500 Huguenot soldiers were captured by the royalist troops under Louis XIII. were massacred.
