Saint-Maixent-sur-Vie is a French commune with 1,078 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the arrondissement of Les Sables-d'Olonne and the canton of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez (until 2015: canton of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie ). The municipality is a member of the Pays de Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie municipal association . The inhabitants call themselves Saint-Maixentais .

Saint-Maixent-sur-Vie is located on the Vie River and close to the Atlantic coast . Saint-Maixent-sur-Vie is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Commequiers in the north, Coëx in the east and south-east, Saint-Révérend in the south and Le Fenouiller in the west.
