Beauvoir-sur-Mer is a French municipality with 3904 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Les Sables-d'Olonne and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Saint-Jean-de-Monts . The inhabitants are called Belverin .

geography

Beauvoir-sur-Mer is located on the Atlantic coast on the Passage du Gois to the Île de Noirmoutier . Beauvoir-sur-Mer is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bouin in the north and north-east, Saint-Gervais in the east and north-east, Saint-Urbain in the east and south-east and La Barre-de-Monts .

The former national routes 148 and 758 run through the municipality .

history

A Gallo-Roman settlement existed under the name Ampennum . With the Reformation, Beauvoir became a center of Calvinism in the Vendée. Louis XIV had Beauvoir Castle completely destroyed in 1689.

Saint-Philibert Church
  • Church of Saint-Philibert (also Saint-Philbert), built on the site of an earlier church, partly in the 10th century in Romanesque style, partly in Gothic style in the 12th century with Gothic extensions in the 14th century, restored 1970 to 1974, Monument historique since 1926

Personalities

  • Françoise de Rohan (1540 – probably 1591), Duchess of Ludonois, supposedly married to Duke Jakob von Nemours , died in Beauvoir Castle
  • François Viète (1540–1603), mathematician, had to withdraw to Beauvoir under the protection of the Duchess of Ludonois due to intrigues.
