Saint-Jean-de-Monts is a French commune with 8,634 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), which is located on the Côte de Lumière in the Vendée department in the Pays de la Loire region. The seaside resort on the Atlantic coast is particularly popular in the summer months.
geography
The city is located in the west of the Vendée department between Notre-Dame-de-Monts and Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez , at the beginning of the Côte de Lumière. Saint-Jean-de-Monts is divided into two parts by a dune landscape planted with pine trees, which runs through the city from north to south. The heart of the city lies east of the dune landscape, while the seashore lies west of it; both parts are separated by a forest that is at least 200 meters wide and only connected by hiking trails and a few alleys.
The beach is the city's magnet and has an excellent reputation due to its length of eight kilometers, its free accessibility and the low wave height. In fact, the sea is mostly calm and only rises slowly due to the very weakly rising sand dunes that begin in the shallow water. When the tide is strong, the sea retreats very far and offers an ideal place for athletes of all kinds and for fishermen on foot.
The marshes (Marais) and the forest are among the ecological sights, not least as a contrast to the properties that have been built since the 1960s and 1970s.
