The Stuttgart Christmas Market is one of the largest and oldest Christmas markets in Europe. In addition to the Ulm Christmas market , it is one of the most famous in Baden-Württemberg . It takes place annually during Advent from the last Wednesday in November to December 23rd around the Old Palace , the Palace Square and the Market Square . During this time it is a crowd puller for around four million visitors from Germany and abroad. About 280 stalls decorate the Christmas market on an area of around 4000 square meters. As in many Christmas markets, there is also a 525 m² ice rink on the Stuttgart ice rink as well as a children's and fairy tale land with a steam-powered mini-train.

history

The Stuttgart Christmas market was first mentioned in a document in 1692. From 1780 the start of the Christmas market was set for the Tuesday after the 3rd Sunday in Advent . At that time it still had the character of a fair with tightrope walkers, magicians, jugglers and jesters. There were also animal demonstrations in menageries . The sales of the market increased greatly, attracting many traders and visitors from far away. In 1850 around 1200 traders offered their goods for sale. In addition to household items, sensational items such as razors , model trains and gramophones were offered at the beginning of the 20th century .

Even in the war years, the Christmas market took place every year. Due to a lack of resources, however, a Christmas tree could not be erected. In the early 1970s the importance of the Christmas market for tourism increased and the old stalls made of folding tables, tent roofs and tarpaulins were replaced by uniform wooden stalls with lavish decorations. At that time it also reached its present size.
