The current canton of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez was created when the French cantons were redistributed in 2015. Its communes come from the former canton of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie (13 of the 14 communes).

The canton is located in the west of the Vendée department. The Atlantic Ocean forms its western border .

In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, Laurent Boudelier / Isabelle Duranteau (both DVD) won against Florent Dupuis / Brigitte Neveu (both FN ) with a share of the vote of 66.11% (turnout: 54.34%)
