Duchy of Thouars
The vice-county of Thouars, later the Duchy of Thouars , around the place Thouars in what is now the French Deux-Sèvres department already existed at the time of the Carolingians .
Although it was formally under the authority of the Counts of Poitou , it was practically independent from the 9th century .
The first known vice counts are Geoffroy I attested in 876, Savary (attested in 903/926) and his brother Aimery I (attested in 923 / around 935), from whom the vice counts descended up to Louis († 1370). Louis' daughter married the Lord of Amboise .
The vice-county was seized several times in the 15th century and finally went to the House of La Trémoille , who were elevated to dukes in 1563, and in 1595 were given the title of Duke of La Trémoille . The family died in 1933 with the 11th Duke of Thouars and 10th Duke of La Trémoille in the male line.
