Valois-Orléans

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Valois-Orléans was a branch line of the House of Valois , which existed from 1392 (conferred the title Duke of Orléans ) until it died out in 1575. The progenitor of the Valois-Orléans family was Ludwig von Valois (* 1372, † 1407), the younger brother of King Charles VI . From 1392 the title of Duke of Orléans was hereditary in the family.

history

After the extinction of the Valois main line in 1498, Ludwig's grandson of the same name climbed the Salian inheritance law as the next male relative of the deceased Charles VIII as Ludwig XII. the French throne and the following year also took over his widow, Anne de Bretagne , even if he had to divorce Charles' sister, Johanna of France , for this . Since he had no sons himself, shortly before his death he married his eldest daughter Claude de France to François d'Orléans , Count of Angoulême , his closest relative in the male line and his successor. Both marriages served less to legitimize the succession, but to keep the Duchy of Bretagne, which Anne de Bretagne, Claude's mother, had brought into the family, also in the family.

Jean d'Orléans, the younger son of Louis von Orléans, was the oldest member of the Angoulême branch line , which had split off from the older line of Valois-Orléans as early as 1407 (conferring the title Count of Angoulême ). With François d'Orléans (Francis I), this line took control of France in 1515 and kept it until the death of Henry III. 1589.
