Princess Maria von Kleve (born September 19, 1426 , † August 23, 1486 in Picardy ) was by marriage Duchess of Orléans (Duchesse d'Orléans).

Life

Maria was the youngest daughter of Duke Adolf II of Kleve (1373–1448) and his wife Maria von Burgund (1393–1463), daughter of Duke Johann Ohnefurcht and Margarete von Straubing-Holland .

On November 6, 1440, 14-year-old Maria von Kleve married the almost 46-year-old Charles de Valois, duc d'Orléans , eldest son of Duke Ludwig von Orléans and Valentina Visconti , daughter of Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti of Milan in Saint-Omer . The marriage, which all reports said was a happy one, had three children after sixteen years of childlessness:

⚭ 1476–1498 (cancellation) Princess Joan of France (1464–1505), abbess of Bourges
⚭ 1499–1514 Duchess Anna of Brittany (1477–1514)
⚭ 1514 Princess Mary Tudor (1496–1533)
  • Anna (1464–1491), Abbess of Fontevrault (1477–1491)
