Margarete von Bayern (* 1363 probably in The Hague ; † 1423 in Dijon ) was the second youngest daughter of the Wittelsbach duke Albrecht I (Bavaria) of Straubing-Holland .

On April 12, 1385, at the double wedding of Cambrai, Margarete married the heir to the House of Burgundy , Johann Ohnefurcht, who was eight years her junior . The wedding was a major event of European stature and attracted over 20,000 guests. The French King Charles VI. was present. The couple had eight children, including Johann's successor, Philip the Good . Margarete regularly visited the French Queen Isabeau , who came from the Ingolstadt branch of the Wittelsbach family, and her niece Jakobäa , the daughter of her brother Wilhelm II.

After her husband was murdered in 1419, she encouraged her son to seek redress for the crime. She died in Dijon in 1423 and was buried in the church of the Champmol Charterhouse . Margarete was still able to follow the first steps her son took to gain the Dutch inheritance of Jacobea, but she did not live to see them renounced in the Hague Treaty .

progeny

Seven of the eight children from Margarete's marriage to Johann Ohnefurcht reached marriageable age.
