Michelle of France, Duchess of Burgundy

Michelle de Valois (born January 11, 1395 in Paris , † July 8, 1422 in Gent ), also known as Michelle de France , was a French princess from the Valois family and by marriage Duchess of Burgundy.

Life

Michelle was a daughter of King Charles VI. of France (1380–1422) and his wife Isabeau de Bavière , daughter of Duke Stephan III. from Bavaria-Ingolstadt . King Charles VII of France (* 1403, 1422–1461) was her brother. The first marriage negotiations were conducted by the queen's brother, Ludwig von Bayern , who asked for the hand of Michelle for Johann , son of the Roman-German king Ruprecht , but was turned away.

In June of the year 1409 she married Count Philip of Charolais in Paris, who in 1419 gave his father Johann Ohnefurcht under the name of Philip III. the good as Duke of Burgundy followed. At the same time, Michelle's brother Ludwig , the heir to the French throne at the time, married a sister of Philip the Good. The double wedding was sealed in 1404 by Queen Isabeau and Duke Johann Feart and was intended to deepen the alliance between Isabeau and Johann. As a dowry, Michelle received the towns of Péronne , Roye and Montdidier , which remained in Burgundian possession even after her death.

At the request of the local estates, Michelle and her husband moved to the county of Flanders in 1413 . From 1419 Philip transferred the government affairs in Flanders and Artois to her as his representative. Michelle was described as gentle, she tried to moderate her mother and was genuinely loved by her husband. She died at the age of 27 after a brief illness, allegedly poisoned by an Italian lady-in-waiting on behalf of Isabeau. Michelle was buried in St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent.
