history

On July 3, 1194 Richard the Lionheart destroyed after a victory against Philip Augustus in the battle of Fréteval the royal archives that Philip had left behind on his escape, including the tax lists. This loss is considered to be the trigger for the foundation of the Archives nationales in Paris.

Attractions

  • The Tour de Grisset: excavations in the 1950s revealed that the tower must have belonged to the thermal baths of a 2nd century villa .
  • The donjon from the end of the 11th century is one of the oldest round donjons in France
