The House of Mark (also Marck , full name of the Mark ) was a German noble family and provided lords of the county of Mark . They were a sideline of the Counts of Berg or of their offshoot, the Counts of Altena-Berg. The other sideline of the Counts of Altena-Berg ruled as Count of Hövel over the county of Hövel-Isenberg until 1225/6 and from 1242 as Count of Limburg over the county of Limburg . The family of the Counts von der Mark later split into different branches. In addition to the lineage, the Counts of the Mark, and later the Dukes of Jülich , Kleve and Berg , the family also included the lines of the House of Arenberg , the Dukes of Bouillon , Princes of Sedan and Lords of Lummen and the Counts of Schleiden .

history

Counts of the Mark

The Counts of the Mark emerged from the family of the Counts of Altena , who in turn came from the family of the Counts of Berg. The first known representative was Adolf I von der Mark , who named himself after the castle Mark . Engelbert II von der Mark († 1328) was married to the heiress of the Arenberg Mechthildis († 1348) rule.

Two lines emerged from the marriage. One was the line of the Counts of the Mark. The other was the Arenberg line. There were also descendants in the form of the dukes of Nevers and the counts of Rochefort .

Adolf II von der Mark continued the Brandenburg line. Due to the expansion of the house, they finally provided the dukes of Jülich, Berg and Kleve. This line died out in 1609.

After a long dispute over inheritance , the county of Mark finally came to Brandenburg in 1666 . The Brandenburg electors carried this title of count along with half a hundred others . Apart from occasional mention in constitutional contracts or in the funerary inscription, it had no special meaning. The coat of arms of the county was included in the "Great State Coat of Arms" with half a hundred individual coats of arms.

In 1682 the electoral prince Friedrich also claimed the inheritance of the Grafschaft Mark by inclusion in the series of the coat of arms hall in Köpenick Castle .

When two illegitimate children of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II were to be given a title befitting their rank, the title of count was remembered:

Eberhard I. became the founder of the Arenberg line. With the three sons of Johann von Arenberg († 1470), a grandson of Eberhard, this line split again. These were the lines Arenberg, Sedan and Lummen.

Eberhard II († 1496) continued the Arenberg line. This died with Robert III. in the male line. The property now fell to his sister Margaretha von der Marck-Arenberg , who married Johann von Ligne . The couple became the founders of a new line from Arenberg.

Line lords of Sedan / Duchy of Bouillon

Robert I. de La Marck († 1487 or 1489) founded the line of the Lords of Sedan. He was also governor of the Duchy of Bouillon. Robert II. De La Marck was called "the devil of the Ardennes". Robert III de La Marck († 1536) was Marshal of France . Even Robert IV. De La Marck was Marshal of France, and was elevated to the Duke of Bouillon. Henri-Robert de La Marck had to cede a large part of the duchy and called himself Prince of Sedan . With the marriage of Charlotte de La Marck († 1594) the duchy fell to the house of La Tour d'Auvergne .

Line of the Lords of Lummen

The founder of the Lummen line in today's Belgium was Wilhelm I von der Mark († 1483), who was known as the "Boar of the Ardennes" because of his cruelty. His descendant Wilhelm II was a leader of the Geusen and died of poison in 1578. The second was Philipp († 1613) married to a daughter of Count Dietrich von Manderscheid-Schleiden. The son Ernst († 1654) was heir to Schleiden and Saffenburg . One of the descendants was Ludwig Engelbert († 1773). His heir, Luise Margarethe, was married to Carl Herzog von Aremberg († 1778). Through this the dominion of the line fell to the house of Aremberg .
