Jacques de Clèves

Jacques de Clèves (full first name Jean-Jacques , born October 1, 1544 ; † September 6, 1564 ) was Duke of Nevers and Pair de France , Count of Rethel and Count of Eu from 1562 to 1564.

Life

Jacques de Clèves was the son of François I de Clèves, duc de Nevers and his wife Marguerite de Bourbon-Vendôme , the older sister of Antoine de Bourbon, duc de Vendôme ; he was thus a cousin of Henri de Bourbon , who in 1572 as Heinrich III. King of Navarre and in 1589 when Henry IV became King of France.

Jacques de Clèves was married in 1558 to Diane de La Marck (1544 – after 1612), daughter of Robert IV. De La Marck , Duke of Bouillon , and Françoise de Brézé , Countess of Maulévrier , daughter of Diane de Poitiers .

At the end of 1562 he unexpectedly inherited Nevers and the Pairie, Rethel and Eu through the death of his brother François II. De Clèves, duc de Nevers , who died in the Battle of Dreux , who allegedly shot himself when he had the correct charge of his Wanted to check gun . He himself died two years later. His marriage was childless.

His heiress in Nevers and Rethel was his older sister Henriette de Clèves , who married Luigi Gonzaga the following year and thus added the two areas to the Gonzaga family ; his younger sister Catherine de Clèves inherited the county of Eu; she was with Antoine III. de Croÿ married, Prince de Porcéan († 1567, the marriage remained childless), later with Henri I. de Lorraine, duc de Guise († 1588), from whom she had 14 children.
