history

Fort Holten had a previous building, which was mentioned as Burg Holte in 1188, 1243 and 1250 when property shares were sold to the Archbishop of Cologne .

The settlement of Holten began here in the Middle Ages under the protection of the castle . From Engelbert II von der Mark, who married Mechthild von Holte and Arberg from the House of Arenberg in 1299 , Holten received city rights as early as 1310.

In 1355 the castle and town became a Klevian fief . Between 1445 and 1557 they were mortgaged to the von Loë family . Occupied by Spanish soldiers during the Eighty Years 'War in 1586 and 1598, these were followed by Ansbacher and Anhaltiner during the Thirty Years' War in 1623, and finally by Hessian troops in 1634. In 1672 Holten was temporarily taken into military possession by French units.

After Holten was under Brandenburg rule from 1609 to 1701 , it belonged to Prussia from 1701 . From 1806 to 1813, temporarily under Bergish rule, the Holten fort fell back to Prussia as a result of the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
