Mengede house was a knight's seat in the Mengede district of Dortmund .

The original moated castle was the ancestral seat of the Knights of Mengede . The best-known representative of this noble family was Johann von Mengede , who was Grand Master of the Teutonic Order in Livonia from 1450 to 1465 .

Mengede House was built between 1260 and 1270 on the floor of the upper courtyard of the old Mengede estate as a fortification with a castle, outer bailey and moats . In addition to the von Mengede family, the von Strünkede knights held large parts of the property. From 1421 to 1604 the castle was owned by the von Bodelschwingh family , until 1715 by the von Büren family, and from 1765 by the Droste zu Vischering family .

In 1723 the fortifications were razed and in 1902, in the course of the diversion and canalization of the Emscher , whose water previously fed the moats and powered several mills, the moats were also filled in. After the Second World War, the building not far from the Emscher became increasingly dilapidated. It was demolished to the ground in 1968 .

The Urflurkarte from 1822/1823 shows a mighty complex of about two hectares with a main castle island and a bailey island in the middle of a large moat. The foundation walls have been preserved to this day. The barely towering remains of the wall give an idea of the floor plan of the manor house and, in places, an interior structure. It is likely to be the remains of a reconstruction from the middle of the 16th century.

An information board in the park recalls the history of the building. House Mengede is registered as a ground monument in the list of monuments of the city of Dortmund .
