Engelbert I. von Isenberg
Engelbert von Isenberg († 1250 ) was bishop of Osnabrück for the first time from 1224 to 1226 . During this time, the Osnabrück Monastery was actually founded as secular territory. Because of his involvement in the murder of Archbishop Engelbert I of Cologne , he had to resign. He was bishop a second time from 1239 to 1250 .
family
He came from the family of the Counts of Isenberg , a branch of the Berg-Altena family . The father was Arnold von Altena . His mother was Mechtild zu Styrum. His uncle was Archbishop Engelbert of Cologne. His brothers were Bruno von Isenberg , Friedrich von Isenberg and Dietrich III. von Isenberg , Bishop of Munster.
First reign
During his first short reign, important decisions were made to expand the Osnabrück Monastery. According to a document from King Heinrich, he acquired the Gogerichte Osnabrück , Iburg , Melle , Dissen , Ankum , Bramsche , Damme and Wiedenbrück in 1225 . In contrast, he left half of the castle court to the city of Osnabrück. In doing so, he laid the foundations for their independence. From 1223 to 1242 he owned a cathedral canonical in Münster .
He was accused, together with Bishop Dietrich von Munster and others, to have been involved in the murder of Archbishop Engelbert I by Friedrich von Isenberg. Since he could not refute this suspicion, he had to give up his office in 1226. Without a spiritual office he has now pursued the secular interests of his house.
Second reign
Konrad I von Rietberg succeeded him as bishop. Engelbert von Isenburg's involvement in or complicity in the murder had since been forgiven. Therefore, he was again bishop in Osnabrück in 1240. During this period he took care of the administration of the pen. He sponsored monasteries and other spiritual institutions and made donations. The city of Osnabrück flourished under his rule. After all, she was so confident that she could defy her sovereigns. The ministerials also turned against the bishop. He could only break their disobedience with the help of the Archbishop of Cologne.
