Bruno von Isenberg († December 20, 1258 ) was Bishop of Osnabrück from 1250 to 1258 .

family

He came from the family of the Counts of Isenberg , a branch of the Berg-Altena family . The father was Arnold von Altena . His mother was Mechtild zu Styrum. His uncle was Archbishop Engelbert I of Cologne . His brothers were Friedrich von Isenberg , Engelbert I. von Isenberg and Dietrich III. von Isenberg , Bishop of Munster.

Life

Like some of his brothers, he was intended for the clergy. Engelbert I of Cologne tried to get him the Dompropstei in Utrecht . The murder of the archbishop by Friedrich von Isenberg resulted in the entire family losing all support.

But after his brother Engelbert had again become Bishop of Osnabrück, Bruno received the provost office of St. Johann and later the cathedral provost office in Osnabrück. Together with his brother Engelbert, he contributed to the peace between the Count von der Mark and his family. He also supported his brother in his confrontation with the Archdiocese of Cologne, but also in the later reconciliation. However, this led to the enmity of the Lords of Lippe with the Diocese of Osnabrück.

After the death of his brother Engelbert von Isenburg, the Osnabrück Cathedral Chapter elected him as his successor. In the first few years, Bruno was able to devote himself almost entirely to promoting monasteries and foundations. At that time, they received substantial donations from the nobility. In 1256 Bruno laid the foundation stone for the new church of St. Johann. In particular, he also acquired bailiwicks from noble families for the diocese. He organized the parishes within the city of Osnabrück. He tried to counter the debts of the bishopric by building a new mill. Bruno tried to secure the bishopric to the south opposite the Grafschaft Ravensberg and the bishopric Münster . He acquired the castle court in Iburg . He gave Iburg city rights and fortified the place.

In the conflict between Simon von Paderborn and the Archbishop of Cologne Konrad von Hochstaden , he was on the side of Cologne. But Bruno also acted as a mediator. Together with the Abbot of Corvey, he finally vouched for Simon von Paderborn and promised to support the archbishop should the Paderborn bishop break the peace.

Bruno von Isenberg was captured by Hermann von Holte in 1256 during a feud. It was not until 1257 that he was released. In May of that year he attended the coronation of King Richard .
