Simon I of Lippe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simon I (around 1196; † June 6, 1277 ) was bishop of Paderborn from 1247 to 1277 .

He was a son of the noble Hermann II. Zur Lippe and Oda von Tecklenburg , daughter of Count Simon I of Tecklenburg and Countess Oda von Berg-Altena. He is not to be confused with his great-nephew Count Simon I. zur Lippe .

In the Lippe household, Simon was considered wicked and contentious. He began his career as provost of the Busdorf canon monastery in Paderborn. In 1247 he became Bishop of Paderborn and got into disputes with the Archbishops of Cologne , mainly over fief issues and fortification rights. In the battle of Wulfskamp ( near Brechte , near Dortmund) in 1254 he was defeated by Archbishop Konrad of Cologne and Bishop Otto II of Münster and was captured from 1254 to 1256.

From 1257 to 1259 he was also administrator of the Archdiocese of Bremen for his old uncle, Archbishop Gebhard II of Bremen . Here he tried to secure the succession of his nephew, Provost Gerhard von der Lippe, in the Bremen collegiate feud in 1258/59 , but failed in the battle of Munderloh against Hildebold von Wunstorf .

From 1260 to 1266 he was administrator of Corvey Abbey .

In 1267 he concluded an alliance with Kurköln against the House of Jülich , of whom he was imprisoned in Münster until 1269 after the battle of Zülpich . Bernhard IV. Zur Lippe released him and let his uncle Simon and his brother Hermann III. to reconcile to the lip .

In 1270, Simon sent Westphalian warriors to Hesse "out of hatred against Heinrich I (Hessen) " to devastate the country there. Near Holzhausen (not far from Fritzlar) most of the Westphalians were killed or taken prisoner.

In 1275, Simon became the guardian of his great-nephew Simon I. zur Lippe , Bernhard's son . Simon died on June 6, 1277.
