Simon I of Tecklenburg (* around 1140 ; † August 8, 1202 ) was Count of Tecklenburg from 1156 to 1202 .

Life

Simon was born the son of Heinrich I von Tecklenburg and Eilike (Heilwig) von Oldenburg (* 1126; † after 1189). He followed his father as Count von Tecklenburg, acquired Ibbenbüren , among others, and was a famous war hero of his time.

In 1173 he renounced the important bailiwick of Münster . For years he was a loyal pillar of the Staufer , and was in Italy with Barbarossa in 1174. He fought as a captain of the Electorate of Cologne in Saxony, Holstein, Italy and in the 3rd crusade in Palestine and marked the high point of his house. He stood against Heinrich the Lion of Saxony-Bavaria because of his brutal efforts to rule and loyally supported Archbishop Philip of Cologne , whose vassal he became.

He was caught on August 1, 1179 in the Second Battle of Haler Feld and had to submit to Heinrich the Lion. In 1182 he got the Osnabrück monastery bailiwick . He founded the home monastery in Essen , where he became Vogt and also Vogt of Metelen and Malgarten . At times he had to pledge Tecklenburg to the Archbishop of Cologne and in 1196 was inherited from the Archbishop of Mainz. It was a time of devastating feuds against the bishops of Osnabrück and Munster and the counts of Ravensburg. Among other things, he renounced Iburg an Osnabrück and already laid the foundations for proper administration, the first notaries from Mecklenburg appeared under him. He stood against Emperor Henry VI. Inheritance plans, supported Otto IV in the war of the throne in 1198 and became his court chancellor in 1201. This sparked a great feud against the Hohenstaufen counts of Ravensberg, against whom he fell victorious. He won the Ravensburger fiefdom of the archbishops of Cologne and Bremen and that of the bishops of Paderborn.

Descendants

Simon was married to Oda von Berg-Altena (* around 1145, † 1224), daughter of Count Eberhard I. von Berg-Altena and Adelheid von Arnsberg. The following children were born from this marriage:

  • Adolf (* around 1187; † June 30, 1224) was Bishop of Osnabrück from 1216
