São Miguel do Pinheiro is a place and a former municipality in the Baixo Alentejo , a region in southern Portugal .
history
The Romans settled here from the 1st century BC. BC, as shown by excavations in the municipality of Manuel Galo.
The current community of São Miguel do Pinheiro goes back to a settlement under the Moors . Excavations from this period are located between the main town of S. Miguel and the town of Alcaria Longa.
The independent municipality of São Miguel do Pinheiro has been documented since the 16th century, originally as São Miguel de Beja, with the main town of Pinheiro, which today also bear the name of São Miguel do Pinheiro.
It remained an independent municipality until the territorial reform in 2013 and has since been part of the municipal association of São Miguel do Pinheiro, São Pedro de Solis e São Sebastião dos Carros .
Attractions
Landmarks of the area are the many windmills on the heights and water mills on the tributaries of the Rio Guadiana , which were used to grind grain in the past.
The original Mannerist parish church Igreja Paroquial de São Miguel do Pinheiro from the 16th century, which was later redesigned several times and today also shows features of the Baroque and Rococo , is one of the monuments of the municipality .

As part of the administrative reorganization in Portugal , São Miguel do Pinheiro was merged with the municipalities of São Pedro de Solis and São Sebastião dos Carros to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de São Miguel do Pinheiro, São Pedro de Solis e São Sebastião dos Carros . The seat of the new municipality was São Miguel do Pinheiro.
