Corte do Pinto is a place and a municipality in the Baixo Alentejo region in southern Portugal .
In the municipality is the extensive site of the former Mina de São Domingos mine , whose loading point is already outside the municipality, in the village of Pomarão on the Rio Guadiana .
history
The municipality is located in the area of the pyrite belt of the South Iberian peninsula . A mining of the mineral, already operated by the Phoenicians here, is documented here at the latest with the Roman mines from AD 397, which were uncovered in 1857 .
The independent municipality of Corte do Pinto has been noted since the 16th century. However, the municipality only experienced the most significant development in the 19th century, in connection with the new start of copper mining.
The English company Mason & Barry Ltd. acquired a first concession in 1856 and began mining pyrite in 1858 . In the years that followed, a town emerged around the mines and factories. The population in the entire parish subsequently increased from around 500 in 1840 to 6,557 in 1950. After that, the production of the mines fell, and with the increasing economic problems, the population of the parish also fell. The factory ceased operations in 1962, and the last conveyor system was finally closed in 1965.
