The Mulomedicina Chironis ("Chiron's Mule Medicine") is a Latin treatise on equine medicine from the 4th century.

author

A name or a pseudonym, Chiron Centaurus, appears as the author. There can only be guesses as to the person of this Chiron. Individual sections have other authors such as Apsyrtus and the unknown Farnax, Policletus and Sotion , and finally Claudius Hermeros or Kermeros, in which one suspects a later editor or the translator of the text from the Greek.

swell

The Mulomedicina Chironis counts different sources: Columella , Gargilius Martialis , Cato , Apsyrtus and also some anonymous and lost writings. It is not a translation from the collection of Greek veterinary texts, the so-called Hippiatrica .

Text transmission

Two manuscripts from the 15th century contain the Mulomedicina Chironis. One of them was discovered in 1885 at the Bavarian State Library in Munich by Wilhelm Meyer . The other manuscript was discovered in 1988 in the library of the University of Basel by Werner Sackmann .

reception

The Mulomedicina Chironis is the main source of the Mulomedicina des Vegetius . The latter commented: Chiron vero et Apsyrtus diligentius cuncta rimati eloquentiae inopia ac sermonis ipsius vilitate sordescunt ( Despite their care, Chiron and Apsyrtus do not sound good due to their poor expression and stylistic error ).

expenditure

In September 1901 Eugen Oder published the only complete edition of this work in Leipzig: Claudii Hermeri Mulomedicina Chironis . In July 1910 published Max Niedermann in Heidelberg a copy of the Books II and III of mulomedicina chironis: samples from the so-called mulomedicina chironis. Book II and III .
