life and work

Eugen Oder, the son of the businessman Gustav Oder, attended the Friedrichswerder Gymnasium in Berlin and, after graduating in 1880, studied classical philology at the University of Bonn . He also spent two semesters at the University of Freiburg and three semesters at the University of Berlin . He was shaped most of all by the Bonn philologists Franz Bücheler , Eduard Lübbert and Hermann Usener . On 27 July 1886 he was with a dissertation on Antoninus Liberalis Dr. phil. PhD . On June 25, 1887, he passed the teaching examination and received the license to teach in Latin, German and Greek for all classes.

After completing his studies, Oder completed the probationary year at the Berlinisches Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster , where he worked as an assistant teacher from Michaelis in 1888. On April 1, 1894 he was appointed senior teacher, in 1906 professor and councilor fourth grade.

In addition to teaching, Oder was also scientifically active. He dealt mainly with the Greek natural scientists, especially the Hippiatrica , to which he devoted several text editions. A chronic illness has restricted his work since his studies. On March 31, 1914, he took early retirement and devoted himself entirely to science. For his achievements he was awarded the Red Eagle Order, fourth class, and in 1924 was made an honorary doctor of veterinary medicine by the Berlin University of Veterinary Medicine .

Apart from his text editions, Oder wrote articles for the journal Rheinisches Museum für Philologie , for Franz Susemihl's History of Greek Literature (1891) and for the Realencyclopedia of Classical Classical Studies .
