Karl Hoppe (philologist)

Karl Hoppe (born August 12, 1868 in Berlin , † August 5, 1946 in Wuppertal - Elberfeld ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher. He is particularly known for his studies of ancient veterinary medicine .

Life

Karl Hoppe, the son of the grammar school teacher Adelbert Hoppe (1827-1894), attended from 1877 to Easter 1886 the Berlin grammar school in the gray monastery . After graduating, he studied Classical Philology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin (summer semester 1886 and from winter semester 1888/89) and at the University of Göttingen (winter semester 1886/87 to summer semester 1888). On June 15, 1891, he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . His dissertation on the yellowing - interpretationes of Tiberius Claudius Donatus was designed by Friedrich Leo looked after. On July 5, 1892, Hoppe passed the teaching exams in Berlin in Latin, Greek and German; on November 21, 1893, a supplementary examination in religion followed.

Hoppe completed the preparatory service for the higher teaching post in Landsberg an der Warthe (seminar year from Easter 1894) and at the Königstädtisches Gymnasium zu Berlin (probation year from Easter 1895). From April 1, 1896 to Pentecost 1897, he taught as a temporary assistant teacher at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium (Berlin) , from Easter 1898 at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Königsberg in the Neumark . On April 1, 1902, he was employed as an assistant teacher at the Friedrichswerder Gymnasium in Berlin.

On April 1, 1903, Hoppe was given a permanent position as a senior teacher at the Staatliches Realgymnasium in Krefeld . On July 2, 1910, he received the title of professor. He retired on April 1, 1932.

In addition to the school service, Hoppe dealt with the veterinary tradition of antiquity. His main work is a two-volume critical edition of the Hippiatrica , which he organized together with Eugen Oder .
