Interpretationes Vergilianae

Tiberius Claudius Donatus was an ancient Latin grammarian . He lived in the 4th century AD and wrote a commentary on Virgil's Aeneid entitled Interpretationes . It is designed as a school commentary and is dedicated to the author's son. The commentaries by Aelius Donatus and Servius were important sources when it was drafted .

The interpretation fell into oblivion during the Middle Ages . After their rediscovery in 1438, they were very popular in the Renaissance , so that the text appeared in 55 editions from 1488 to 1599. The Stuttgart grammar school professor Heinrich Georgii presented the first critical edition (Teubner, Leipzig 1905–1906). It is out of date due to numerous new discoveries, but still not replaced.
