Thomas Gardener

Thomas Gärtner (born January 23, 1969 in Rheydt ) is a German classical philologist .

After graduating from high school in Mönchengladbach in 1988, Gärtner studied at the University of Cologne , where he passed the master's examination in 1997/1998 and received his doctorate in 1998 . From October 1998 to March 1999 he worked as a research assistant in the department for papyrology and epigraphy . His habilitation project was supported by a grant from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation from April 1999 to September 2001 , and from October 2001 to April 2002 by a grant from the German Research Foundation . During this time he worked from October 2000 to April 2001 as a research assistant in the Department of Papyrology and Epigraphy. Since May 2002 he has been in charge of an assistant position. In December 2002 he completed his habilitation in Classical Philology. In July 2008 he was appointed adjunct professor.

Gärtner's research focuses on the history of tradition and textual criticism as well as scholia literature . He deals with Greek rhetoric and historiography as well as with Latin epics from the Flavian period to late antiquity , as well as with Middle Latin poetry.
