history

The mining company of the Mina de São Domingos has constructed installations such as warehouses, storage areas and a loading facility for ore from the nearby mine for loading at the river terminal in Pomarão. Ore freighters who sailed the Guadiana River from the Algarve coast docked here. It was loaded with pyrite ore that had previously been transported by rail from the Mina de São Domingos. In 1966 this mine was closed. The ore line, which was built exclusively for freight traffic in 1858 , was one of the first rail lines in Portugal. As early as 1864 , 563 cargo ships docked in the port of Pomarão to pick up ore loads. This freight traffic practically represented the limit for a freight transport on the Guadiana, as this only had a draft of about four meters in some places.

The reservoir of the Chança river is already in the south of Pomarão on Spanish territory.
