Charles de Clèves

Charles de Clèves (German: Karl von Kleve , * around 1491 ; † August 27, 1521 in Paris ) was Count of Nevers and Eu from 1506 until his death and, by marriage, Count von Rethel .

Life

Charles de Clèves was the eldest son of Count Engelbert von Kleve and his wife Charlotte de Bourbon († 1520). On his father's side, Charles came from the German noble family of those von der Mark , on his mother's side from the Bourbon family , a sideline of the French royal family. Charles got involved in intrigues at the court of King Francis I and was imprisoned in a tower of the Louvre in 1521 . His mother and the Duke of Bourbon stood up for him. He passed away before they could get his release.

Charles de Clèves was married to his cousin Marie d'Albret , Countess von Rethel , since January 25, 1504 (or 1505) . The couple's only child was their son François I. de Clèves, born in 1516 .
