Adolf II of the Mark

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adolf II. († 1347 ) ruled the county of Mark and later also the county of Kleve . He was the first-born son of Count Engelbert II von der Mark and his wife Matilda von Arenberg . Brothers were Eberhard I. von der Marck-Arenberg , Everhard von der Mark (cathedral provost in Münster) and Engelbert III. von der Mark (1364 to 1368 Archbishop of Cologne) and a sister Katharina was abbess in the Essen monastery.

Adolf II, who was also Vogt of the Essen monastery , managed there in 1337 to have his sister Katharina von der Mark elected abbess there after Kunigunde von Berg had abdicated .

Through Adolf II's marriage to Countess Margarete von Kleve , the daughter of Count Dietrich VII./IX. von Kleve and heiress of the county of Kleve, his son was later able to take over this county.

He is not to be confused with his uncle Adolf II , Bishop of Liège.
