Tomb in St. Martin, Amberg

Ruprecht Pipan (born February 20, 1375 in Amberg ; † January 25, 1397 ibid) was Prince Elector of the Palatinate and son of Prince Elector Ruprecht III. von der Pfalz (from 1400 also Roman-German King) and his wife Elisabeth von Hohenzollern-Nuremberg .

As a child, the heir to the throne was betrothed to Princess Katharina, daughter of King Charles V of France in 1379 , but the marriage did not take place. At this engagement Ruprecht Pipan was already recognized by the ruling Palatine Elector Ruprecht I , his great-great-uncle, as future heir to the throne and universal heir; after his death, confirmed again in 1392.

Ruprecht Pipan joined the Hungarians in the battle of Nicopolis against the Ottomans in 1396 . He returned sick and died in Amberg at the age of 21.

Ruprecht Pipan was buried in the St. Martins Church in Amberg ; his magnificent grave is preserved there.

There were no descendants from his marriage to Elisabeth von Sponheim . Elisabeth was the last countess on the Sponheim-Kreuznach line (Vordere Grafschaft). Until her death in 1417, she often stayed at the court of her father-in-law and bequeathed 1/5 of the Vordere Grafschaft Sponheim to the Electoral Palatinate.
