Merciless Duel (Original title: The Last Debate ) is an American thriller from 2000 . Directed by John Badham , the screenplay was written by producer Jon Maas based on the novel The Last Debate by Jim Lehrer .

A politician is running for President of the United States . He attends a press conference that is televised live. Reporters Mike Howley, Barbara Manning, Joan Naylor and Henry Ramirez ask him questions suggesting the politician mistreated women. The journalist Tom Chapman sees it as a set game and does some research.
Reviews
Rotten Tomatoes editors wrote that John Badham had created "a fascinating look at Washington's political machinery ." The representations of James Garner, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy and Marco Sanchez are intense. The film was released when the ethical side of the Gore / Bush presidential campaign was questioned about what would make it "timely and intelligent" .
Film-Dienst wrote that the film contained a "confrontation with the power of the media that tried to focus on the importance of establishing the truth" , but "did not provide clear answers" . The "solidly staged film" remains "ambivalent in its message" and "given the lack of courage to radical approaches the explosive nature of its topic in favor of committed television entertainment" .
The magazine TV Spielfilm 5/2008 wrote that the film was "played well" .
