Elisabeth (Sponheim-Kreuznach)

Elisabeth von Sponheim and Vianden, Duchess of Bavaria (* 1365 , probably on September 4th ; † July 31st, 1417 ) was the last countess of the front county of Sponheim and countess of Vianden .

Her parents were Simon III. Count of Sponheim and Maria von Vianden. Elisabeth married Engelbert III on April 5, 1381 . von der Mark , the marriage remained childless. Engelbert died in 1392. When she married, Elisabeth renounced her right of inheritance to the counties of Sponheim and Vianden. With the death of her brother, she became the only heiress. The widow married Ruprecht Pipan , son of Count Palatine Ruprecht III. Ruprecht Pipan died childless in 1397. The father-in-law was elected German king in 1400. Elisabeth lived at the court of her father-in-law in Heidelberg until her father's death in 1414. At this point in time she inherited the anterior county of Sponheim and ruled it until her death. In 1416 she wrote her brother-in-law, Elector Ludwig III, out of gratitude to the Palatine family . a fifth of the front county ( castle and town Kreuznach , castle and settlement Ebernburg and Gutenburg , castle Argenschwang and Naumburg , castle and settlement Koppenstein , castle and town Gemünden and town Kirchberg ).

Elisabeth von Sponheim died Anno d (omi) ni m cccc xvii in vigilia ad vincula Petri (July 31, 1417) and was buried in the parish church of Kreuznach . The remaining four fifths of the front county fell to Johann V. von Sponheim-Starkenburg . The County of Vianden fell to Engelbert I of Nassau , whose paternal grandmother was the sister of the last Count of Vianden.

A grave monument, partly made of bronze, was located in the choir of the Pauluskirche ; it was destroyed in 1717.
