history

The castle was first mentioned in 1213 as "castro Weitersheim" . In 1334 the Counts of Sponheim (Vordere Grafschaft) bought the castle, which has since been renamed Gutenburg. After this purchase, a fundamental renovation took place. After the Sponheimers died out (Kreuzenacher line † 1414; Starkenburger line † 1437) the castle came to the common rulers of the front Sponheim (mainly Margraviate Baden and Electoral Palatinate ). The castle has lost its importance over time, was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and fell into disrepair. In the view in Daniel Meisner's Thesaurus philopoliticus , it is already depicted as a ruin. The ruin is now privately owned.

The castle complex had a core castle which was completely surrounded by a ring kennel , protected by a curtain wall with towers and a ditch . The ruins still show clear remains of the wall.
