Origin and family

Dietrich von der Mark was the son of Count Adolf von Kleve and Mark and Margarete von Berg , daughter of Count Gerhard I von Berg-Ravensberg .

Act

Dietrich studied at the University of Montpellier between 1353 and 1357. In 1364 he was first mentioned in documents as the canon of Cologne . Four years later he was elected provost here . Pope Gregory XII. issued to him on July 29, 1371 entitled to a Dompräbende in Munster in exchange for the Liege stipend as canon Lubbert of Roden mountains. Dietrich was canon in Trier and Worms as well as provost in Xanten, Rees and Zyfflich. In 1374 renounced it to all spiritual offices and retired to secular life. His father made him Count von der Mark while he was still alive in 1393 . The county Kleve inherited after the death of his father in 1394 Dietrich's older brother Adolf .

Dietrich died in a feud in 1398. His grave is in the collegiate church of Hörde . The successor in the county of Mark was taken by Dietrich's brother Adolf, who thus united Kleve and Mark in personal union.
