Christian Siegmund Georgi

Christian Siegmund Georgi (born July 20, 1702 in Luckau ; † September 6, 1771 in Wittenberg ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

As the son of an attorney general, Georgi first attended school in his hometown. After continuing his education in Zwickau in 1720 , he began studying at the University of Wittenberg on June 4, 1722 . In addition to his interest in theology, he first devoted himself to the classical and oriental languages ​​and on April 30, 1723 obtained the academic degree of master's degree at the philosophical faculty.

On February 1, 1726 he completed his habilitation at the Wittenberg Academy with the dissertation "De Chaldaeosyrismis Rabbinismis et Persismis dictioni Novi Foederis immerito affictis", became an adjunct on November 17, 1727 at the philosophical faculty, 1736 associate professor of philology, 1743 full professor of the Theology and received his doctorate in theology on October 17, 1748 .

Georgi held the dean's office of the theological faculty several times and was rector of the Wittenberg Academy in the winter semesters of 1758, 1764 and 1770 . Above all, Georgi has rendered outstanding services to the criticism and exegesis of the New Testament. His approach to dealing with the topic stood in the opposite relationship to Johannes Vorst and Johannes Olearius . Therefore, he was hostile to Johann Erhard Kapp and Siegmund Friedrich Dresig , with whom he led a literary disputation. In addition to a number of university disputations and programs on dogmatic matters, Georgi also participated in historical and chronic writings.
