Johann Erhard Kapp (born March 23, 1696 in Oberkotzau , † February 7, 1756 in Leipzig ) was a German rhetorician and historian .

Life

The son of a carter attended high school in Hof (Saale) in 1706 and began studying at Leipzig University in 1714 . Christian Friedrich Börner (1663–1753), with whom he heard exegetical and ecclesiastical topics, and Johann Gottlob Carpzov , who introduced him to the New Testament writings, were his most formative teachers at that time. By Johann Burckhardt Mencke he received access to its extensive library.

Under this guidance, he entered the College of Historical Literature of Johann Georg Walch in 1715 , acquired the academic degree of Master of Philosophy on February 17, 1718 and followed the theological lectures with Carpzov and Börner with interest. On December 30, 1720, with a document on the sale of indulgences, he obtained permission to teach at universities as a Magister legens (habilitation). On March 14, 1723 he became an adjunct of the philosophical faculty. 1726 he was a member of the great prince's college, in 1727 he was appointed associate professor of rhetoric and on April 5, 1734 full professor of the same.

Kapp also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leipzig University. He was dean of the philosophical faculty several times and in the summer semesters 1734, 1738, 1740, 1746, 1750, 1754 rector of the alma mater . family

The doctor is from his marriage on April 8, 1738 with Dorothea Sophia (* June 28, 1709; † November 17, 1751), the daughter of the pastor Christian Weise the Elder, (she was a godmother of Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach ) Christian Ehrhard Kapp (born January 23, 1739 in Leipzig; † September 30, 1824 there) also became known.

Act

Kapp made a name for himself especially in the area of Reformation history, which still has a good reputation today. In addition, extensive life reports of the people of his time flowed from his pen, which are repeatedly noticed. The author, who was quite fertile at the time, is still worthy of subjective observation today. According to Valentin Ernst Löscher, he was the leader of the magazine “Innocent News of Old and New Theological Matters”. Judging by his historical research, he is based closely on the hermeneutics of Johann Martin Chladni .

Together with Siegmund Friedrich Dresig , he conducted a literary disputation against Christian Siegmund Georgi and his criticism and exegesis of the New Testament.
