Life

Christian Ehrhard Kapps father was the rhetorician and historian Johann Erhard Kapp . First he obtained the baccalaureate in 1762 and the licentiate in 1763. A year later he obtained the medical doctor's degree in 1768 with a dissertation entitled: De exstirpatione tumorum in mamnis , Leipzig 1768. Kapp began to practice as a doctor in his hometown. It was said that Kapp was always in great demand as a doctor because of his skills and uncomplicated manners. He also proved to be very conscientious in his work. He was considered the most sought-after doctor in the trade fair city. He often showed the right instinct for the illnesses of his patients. Goethe later knew how to praise this in Karlsbad .

His writing activity concerned medical subjects. He also published a medical journal from 1774, the main author of which he himself was. This was entitled: Collection of selected treatises for the use of practical doctors . He also worked as a translator of medical literature from English. He made the English, but also the French healing arts known in Germany.

In 1807 Goethe dedicated a few lines to the doctors of Karlsbad . Goethe praised the treatment in the highest tones. First and foremost, it concerns Christian Ehrhard Kapp, who joined the list of Goethe's doctors . So Goethe wrote a corresponding letter. Goethe addressed one of the letters mentioning Kapp to his wife Christiane von Goethe on July 14, 1807. Goethe also mentions the treatment of Kapp in his diaries.

Kapp was not denied public honors. According to the necrology of 1826, he received the royal Saxon civil order and the royal Swedish Wasa order . He also became a member of the Collegii Medici in Stockholm and the Medical-Surgical Academy in St. Petersburg . There is also a portrait of Kapps in the custody / art collection of the University of Leipzig , which Anton Graf painted in 1779 . The client was the publisher Philipp Erasmus Reich , through whose widow Friederike Louise Reich it was donated to the university for the university anniversary in 1809. This was previously in the Leipzig University Library .

  8. This time Karlsbad was also blessed with doctors. Dr. First I mention Kapp von Dresden, whose presence in the bathroom always made me happy, because his conversation was extremely instructive and his care for those who confided in him was extremely conscientious. Hofrat Sulzer von Ronneburg, a loyal natural scientist and diligent mineralogist, followed suit; Dr. Mitterbacher, if his business permitted, was also a member of the council. Dr. Florian, a Bohemian from Manetin, also joined them, and so one had the opportunity to become aware of more than one of the medical ways of thinking and treating. http://www.zeno.org/Literatur/M/Goethe,+Johann+Wolfgang/Autobiographisches/Tag-+und+ Jahreshefte/1807 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: Berlin edition. 9. I am doing very well, especially for eight days. Doctor Kapp from Leipzig and Dr. Mitterbachers from here went to great lengths to research my circumstances and, after I finished the actual fountain cure, prescribed me a medicine that did wonderful things .--- If it is permanent, we want Karlsbad and the doctors praise.
