Hans Gerhard Graef
Hans Gerhard Gräf (born May 5, 1864 in Weimar ; † December 20, 1942 in Jena ) was a German Goethe researcher .
Gräf was born on May 5, 1864 in Weimar. He came to the editing of the Weimar Edition (WA) of Goethe's works, which is still fundamental to this day, early on . In this edition, Gräf mainly edited the III. Department, namely Goethe's diaries - later selected editions from it.
Around 1900 Gräf went to Wolfenbüttel to the Herzog August Library . There he worked on a standard work on Goethe research - the result was the "Gräf" ( Goethe's printed statements about his poems ). In the following years the poet and scholar lived again in his native city of Weimar.
Gräf also made a name for himself by researching Goethe's local relationship to Berka / Ilm (today: Bad Berka ) and by compiling Goethe's love poems [re-edited by Emil Staiger] and a complete Faust edition by Insel-Verlag .
Two editions of his poems stand for his own lyrical talent, the last volume even in two editions.
In 1916, Gräf published Goethe's correspondence with Christiane Vulpius .
Apparently through the mediation of Bartels , who was Hermann Haessel's in- house author in Leipzig , a quite impressive Goethe anthology was published in 1924 for his 60th birthday, also in two unchanged editions. Later, Hans Gerhard Gräf was still involved in Goethe work editions (thin print editions) of the Insel-Verlag. In old age he moved from Weimar to nearby Jena , where he died in 1942.
Probably due to the war, the obituaries for the important Goethe researcher were only modest, but his editions are indispensable research literature to this day.
