Julius Wahle

Julius Wahle (born February 15, 1861 in Vienna , † November 7, 1940 in Dresden ) was an Austro-German literary scholar who became known, among other things, as the editor of the letters of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .

Life

Wahle studied with Erich Schmidt , received his doctorate in 1885 and from 1886 worked as an archivist at the Goethe and Schiller Archive in Weimar , which he took over in 1921. He was u. a. with Max Hecker collaborator on the Weimar edition of Goethe's works. In 1933, as a Jew, he was forced to leave the Goethe Society . Wahle died in Dresden in 1940. His grave is located in the New Jewish Cemetery there .

Works

Wahle's first publication on Goethe was published in 1892 by the Goethe Society Weimar: Das Weimarer Hoftheater under Goethe's direction. Edited from new sources by Julius Wahle. In 1896 Wahle's biography about the bookseller and antiquarian Bernhard Friedrich Voigt (1787-1859) was published. In 1908 Wahle and Bernhard Suphan published from Goethe's archive: The first Weimar collection of poems in facsimile reproduction . In 1924 Wahle and Victor Klemperer published Vom Geiste neue Literaturforschung - Festschrift for Oskar Walzel .

Awards

Wahle became a professor in 1908. On December 30, 1910, Julius Wahle was the first person ever to be honored with the Goethe Society Weimar's highest distinction, the Goethe Golden Medal . On Wahle's 60th birthday, his colleagues around Werner Deetjen published the Festschrift Funde und Forschungen in his honor .
