Bernhard Ludwig Suphan (spoken: SUP-han; born January 18, 1845 in Nordhausen ; † February 9, 1911 in Weimar ) was a literary scholar , philologist and the first director of the Goethe-Schiller Archive .

Life

Bernhard Suphan is the son of the barber Friedrich Karl Suphan (* 1818 in Frankenhausen, † 1865 in Nordhausen). His mother Friederike Amalie Meyer, widowed Oppermann (* 1802, † 1848 in Nordhausen) he lost quite early and was taken by stepmother Juliane Auguste Suphan, née Rübsamen, a midwife (* 1831 in Nordhausen; † 1875 in Nordhausen, marriage in 1853 in Nordhausen ) behaved. He studied philology and German at the universities in Halle and Berlin . In 1866, Suphan received his doctorate in Halle (Saale). He was a high school teacher at the Latina in Halle (Saale) and published a school book that was widely used at the time. As an award, Suphan was transferred to the Friedrichswerder Gymnasium as a senior teacher in 1868 . There he was awarded the title of professor in 1886 .

Suphan became director of the Goethe-Schiller-Archiv in Weimar in 1887 until his retirement at the end of 1910.

In 1887 Suphan became a board member of the Goethe Society , of which he became vice president in 1906. In 1888 Suphan became a board member of the German Shakespeare Society in Weimar. From 1892 Bernhard Suphan was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

On May 5, 1896, Suphan was appointed Privy Councilor on the occasion of the inauguration of the new archive building.

As director of the Goethe-Schiller-Archiv, Suphan apparently suffered severely from the lack of appreciation for the work of his archive and for him as a scientist in the years after the death of Grand Duchess Sophie . This is indicated by this transcript of September 12, 1901, dictated by Suphan: “Should it ever read in an obituary: BS Herderum edidit. Obiit. Released the Herder, then blessed the time, it should be fine with me. "

On October 18, 1910, Suphan wrote a request to Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst for dismissal on January 1, 1911, for leave of absence until then and for subsequent retirement. This was approved by decree of November 13, 1910; The Grand Duke changed the wording from "in recognition of his longstanding loyal service" to "with the warmest recognition of the excellent services dedicated to the Goethe and Schiller Archives over a number of years" .

Suphan lived in Weimar in the Altenburg , where he died in 1911. On the night of February 8th to 9th, 1911, Bernhard Suphan - apparently in a deep depression - put an end to his life.

Works

Suphan designed and implemented the plan for a historical-critical edition of the works of Johann Gottfried Herder : In genetic-historical order, he published each individual work of Herder from the preliminary work, sketches and new versions to the finished form. Herder's grandson Theodor Stichling had generously made his grandfather's estate available to him. And so appeared under Suphan's editorship and together with Rudolf Haym , Carl Redlich and Johannes Imelmann Herder's "Collected Works" between 1877 and 1908 in a total of 33 volumes. During this work, Suphan found information about the collaboration between Goethe and Herder, which was still unknown at the time. He was able to show that Goethe wrote his early poems under the intense influence of Herder.

In 1900 Suphan published two further publications: on a hitherto unknown poem by Friedrich Schiller , to which he gave the title Germany's Greatness , and on Goethe's late love poem Die Marienbader Elegie , which appeared in valuable facsimile print.
