Johannes Gachnang

Johannes Gachnang (born October 30, 1939 in Zurich ; † October 11, 2005 in Bern ) was a Swiss artist, exhibition organizer and publisher.

Life

Johannes Gachnang initially worked as a freelance artist in Istanbul , Rome and Amsterdam in the late 1960s . From 1974 to 1982 he was director of the Kunsthalle Bern . As a curator , he shaped various international exhibitions such as the exhibition "The curved horizon - Art in Berlin 1945 - 1967" at the Academy of Arts (Berlin) , " documenta 7 " in Kassel , and the "Reconstruction of the City" at the International Building Exhibition 1984 IBA in Berlin and Milan 1984–1985, the “Bilderstreit” in Cologne in 1989 as well as “Chaos and madness - permutations of contemporary art” in Krems an der Donau in Austria in 1996.

In 1983 Johannes Gachnang founded the “Institute for Contemporary Art” at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna . Gachnang was also a sought-after visiting professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg .

In 1983 he founded the publishing house Gachnang & Springer with the Berlin art dealer Rudolf Springer . Since 2003 Johannes Gachnang has been to be found again as an exhibition organizer.

In 2005, an exhibition at the Museum of Applied Art in Frankfurt was dedicated to Gachnang's influence as a publisher. The focus of the exhibition was Gachnang's proximity to artists such as Karel Appel , Meret Oppenheim , Georg Baselitz , Per Kirkeby , Sigmar Polke , Jörg Immendorff , A. R. Penck , Markus Lüpertz , Günther Förg and Luciano Fabro .

The publishing house Gachnang & Springer was taken over by Scheidegger and Spiess .

Awards

  • 2001 Grand Art Prize of the Canton of Zurich
  • 2005 Prize Meret Oppenheim of the Swiss Confederation for his life's work.
